Since I started my quest a few years ago searching for the ultimate knowledge management tool, I’ve discovered a number of interesting applications that help people efficiently organize information. There certainly is no shortage of solutions for this problem domain. Many tools exist that offer the ability to discover, save, organize, search, and retrieve information. However, I’ve noticed a trend in recent years, and some newer applications are focusing more on the visual representation and relationship of knowledge.

Last year I picked up a copy of The Integral Vision by Ken Wilber. I recently decided to re-read the book, and created a comprehensive book summary highlighting the key pieces of information in the book. The book summary is presented in the form of mind maps for each chapter.

Since I last posted about Vannevar Bush’s vision for a Personal Memex, I decided to focus my efforts on building an impressive personal travel journal, and share the results to illustrate the capabilities of a Memex.

The other week, I wrote a blog post The Visual Wiki: A New Metaphor For Knowledge Access and Management. At the time, until I read the paper in depth, I hadn’t realized that this was about a project that I had blogged about last year: Thinkbase - A Visual Semantic Wiki. In a nutshell:
“Thinkbase is a new way to navigate and explore information on the web. It is what we call a ‘Visual Wiki’. It is based on Freebase, an open, shared database of the world’s knowledge - …
I’ve had an interest in Biofeedback, Mind Machines, and Brainwave Entrainment for many years now. Since my collection of links/bookmarks is starting to grow too large I decided to start putting them in a mindmap. This map is by no means complete, but a very good start for people who are interested in this topic. I’ve personally had a lot of experience with brainwave entrainment software, but am eager to try out some mindmachines in the near future. Please check out what I have so far (I plan to update …
I found a very interesting project from David François Huynh, developer of some impressive projects over at Simile. Parallax offers a new way to browse and explore data on Freebase, one of the largest open and shared (structured) databases of knowledge on the web.

I also discovered a somewhat related research project at Stanford called Vispedia.
Today I officially started kicking off my research into Spiral Dynamics. I’ve had some superficial knowledge of the subject due to my exposure to a number of books on Integral philosophy. I recently came across the original book on Spiral Dynamics by Beck and Cowan and thought this would be a good place to start.
I also remembered seeing a link to a mindmap on Spiral Dynamics a couple years ago and decided to hunt it down before I immersed myself too far into the book. I found …
I’ve been meaning to blog about this for some time, and thought that now is a good time to share. A few months ago I came across an amazing mindmap at the IQ Matrix called the MasterMind Matrix. This has to be one of the largest / most intriguing / informative / unique mindmaps that I’ve come across.
“Imagine taking a unique journey through the depths of your mind and stepping into a world of limitless possibilities where every one of your thoughts, habits, behaviors, beliefs, decisions and actions are revealed …

I was happy to discover that I’m now listed on Alltop’s site for Mind Mapping. So, what is Alltop exactly? According to their site:
The purpose of Alltop is to help you answer the question, “What’s happening?” in “all the topics” that interest you. You may wonder how Alltop is different from a search engine. A search engine is good to answer a question like, “How many people live in China?” However, it has a much harder time answering the question, “What’s happening in China?” That’s the kind of question that …
I have to admit, when I first came across this software last week I was instantly impressed. I’ve had a fascination with software that allow you to visualize and comprehend information in different and exciting ways. Bee Docs Timeline, an application for Mac OS X (sorry Windows and Linux fans), is a great example of how to create and present smooth, professional looking timelines in a relatively easy fashion.
Nothing like combining my love of linux geekery and information visualization:

I recently caught an article that Chuck Frey posted earlier in the month on the Mind Mapping Software Blog. In the article, The case for a Visual Mapping Body of Knowledge, Chuck interviews Wallace Tait.
Wallace Tait is a professional visual mapping consultant based in the Canadian Province of Ontario. He is the co-author of the e-book Visual Mapping: A Systematic Framework for Business Improvement and co-founder of the Visualmapper group of consultants. He is an expert on the effective creation, management and presentation of graphically mapped information systems. Wallace recently …
